The great pyramids of Egypt have always captivated and amazed people of every age. These wondrous structures stand on the outskirts of Egypt in Cairo. The Pyramid of Menkaure is the smallest of three pyramids on the Giza Plateau.

The purpose of this pyramid was to act as the tomb for the Pharaoh Menkaure. Due the unfinished state of many of his statues, it is believed that he had a relatively short reign. According to some historic legends of the time period, Menkaure was much more kind and benevolent than the Pharaohs before him.

The bottom portion of the pyramid was once encased in granite. This stone is more difficult to work with than the traditional limestone that was usually used. Much of this pyramid is in decent condition, including the smaller accompanying pyramids and temple.

It is not known exactly why this pyramid is so much smaller than the others at Giza. There are some theories. It could be that there simply was not much room left on the plateau. It could also be due to financial difficulties, such as highly priced building costs.

Despite the small size, the mortuary temple was created with care. It was once elaborately decorated. Even though it was made with red mud bricks and limestone, it is in good condition and well preserved.

Unfortunately, the sarcophagus of Menkaure is no longer with the pyramid. When the tomb was excavated, the sarcophagus was taken out and shipped to England. The ship sank while on route, and the sarcophagus was lost. Those who visit the pyramid will find a wooden coffin, but it is not the original.

The pyramids of Giza have fascinated all who look upon them. The pyramid of Menkaure is full of secrets and wonders. These tombs are an enigmatic puzzle of human history.
