Volcanoes are majestic and dangerous pieces or nature that have captivated human beings since the beginning of time. They provide fertile soil, while sleeping ominously in the background. Gunung Sibayak is one of those sleeping giants.

The mountain rests in Northern Indonesia, overlooking the town of Berastagi. This is a stratovolcano, which means it is built upon layers of hardened lava, pumice, and ash. When they erupt the lava explodes upwards from the volcano. This creates steep profiles, as the magma tends to cool before it gets very far.

While it has been more than a hundred years since Gunung Sibayak has erupted, there is still activity. There are hot springs around the volcano, produced from the geothermic activity. Visitors can soak in these springs for a relaxing rest before hiking back to the town. There are also vents where steam will rush out. One can find crater lakes, which are peculiar to look at. They have a greenish color from the volcanic gases.

Many tourists are happy for a chance at climbing the volcano. Compared to other volcanoes, Gunung Sibayak is easy to climb. Good hiking gear is still necessary. There are paths for walking, but they can be steep and slippery. It is also advisable to bring extra clothing, as the temperature can drop rather quickly at night. Food and drinks are also needed for the hike. Like with any climb or hike, one should never do it alone. The hike from start to finish will last about five hours.
