Reasons to visit Plitvice Lakes

Plitvice lakes, located in Croatia, are a tourist destination for thousands. They are actually the most popular tourist attraction in Croatia. They were granted the status of UNESCO World Heritage in 1979. The lakes have breathtaking scenery with beautiful waterfalls, cliffs, hiking trails, and are hidden in the middle of three major mountains: Mala Kapela Mountain, Pljesevica Mountain, and Medvedak Mountain. These mountains are all part of the Dinaric Alps and house a variety of wildlife such as bears, wolves, and rare birds.

The Plitvice lakes are a national park and located in a region of Croatia called Lika. All sixteen lakes are separated by natural dams created by moss, bacteria, algae, and plants that help in creating magnificent waterfalls and making it perfect for exploring. There is an upper and a lower collection of lakes that showcase amazing colors that seem surreal, even to the naked eye.

The shades of green and blue change depending on the natural organisms and buildup found in the water and the surrounding land. This makes the lakes distinctively unique and desirable for anyone looking for nature in one of its most beautiful forms.

Every year, athletes from all around the world unite to take part in the Plitvice Marathon. This competition is usually done in June of each year and with a small entry fee, anyone can compete. There are different divisions for different classes and ages making it a family event.

Not only are the Plitvice lakes a national treasure for Croatia, they are also a water source for residents. Therefore, swimming is forbidden. You can, however, swim in the Kyrka waterfalls nearby, and also in the Korana River. This river flows directly into the national park. You may still hike on trails and bridges provided so you can take in the ambience of the water and the angelic terrain that surrounds it.
