Predjamski Grad, Slovenia
The castle Predjamski Grad is one of the most breathtaking tourist attractions in the southwestern part of Slovenia. The current castle that stands on the site was built in the early 1800's and is the third such castle that was built into this large, impressive cave. Visitors to the site will see the castle as it has appeared in popular Hollywood movies and will be impressed both by its size and stature, as well as its incredible location in the beautiful mountains of rural Slovenia.
The earliest mention of this then Gothic castle can be seen in late 13th century writings. Little is known of its use until the 16th century, when it become the home to a prominent German family who came into conflict with the Italian government. A prolonged siege of the castle tested its strategic placement in the rocky cave, and ended with the death of the owner. The history of this conflict is detailed by the curators of the castle, and modern guests can be regaled with the tales of its place in history.
The newest incarnation of the building, and the one that will be seen by those who go, was built in 1810, and features architecture that plays off the natural landscape. With tunnels through the rock that enable visitors to leave the castle unseen, it is still a great example of using the natural terrain to fortify a castle.
Those who will be making the trek to Slovenia will find other such examples of old, impressive castles that were built to withstand attacks from enemies. Getting around the country can be difficult, and those who will be visiting are advised to rent a car or employ a driver to make getting to these remote locations easier. No matter when you will visit, you will enjoy hearing more about the interesting place that this country holds in history.
