Grossglockner Glacier or mountain is the highest mountain in Austria and is a must see if you’re traveling in this country to either Tyrol or Carinthia. You can see this wondrous mountain from both of these cities very well as it has a height of 12,464 feet. It is the highest mountain in the Glockner group of mountains and lies in the Hohe Tauern Range. Many people say that if you have not visited the Grossglockner when coming to Austria then you have not seen Austria. The Grossglockner is a tourist attraction in the region of Tyrol and Carinthia and offers breathtaking views for tourists and visitors. It is possible to drive by car, bicycle, bus or even walk on the Grossglockner Alpine road. When you travel on this road you are able to see the beautiful harmony between the Grossglockner Mountain, the Pasterze glacier, the foilage and the landscape of the High Tauern National Park. Some people refer to the Grossglockner as a glacier and some people actually call it a mountain. Actually the lower part of it is a glacier and as you begin to climb higher you can see it is actually a huge mountain.

The Grossglockner Alpine road is an attraction that brings more than 1 million visitors to it every year. This road was built between 1930 and 1935 and ascends to a height of 8438 feet and took more than 3000 people five years to complete this miracle of construction. It is only possible to drive on the first thirty miles of this road during May to early November. This is because during any other time weather conditions permit you from going any further.
