Mount Everest is a famous peak in the Himalayas that most poeople have at least heard of. This worldwide notoriety has made the hike to the top of this mountain a very popular trek. For a lot of nature lovers it has become too popular and crowded. Those in search of a hike just as inspiring as Everest have turned to the peaks of Gokyo Ri.

Gokyo Peak is an impressive 17,575 feet above sea level. It is located in the Khumbu region in the Nepal Himalayas. The trail to this peak starts out the same as the one that leads you to the top of Mount Everest. A stay at Namche Bazaar the village that is the base camp to Everest will also be the base camp for Goyko Ri. From there you will take a different path that winds up the valley and runs along side rivers that flow from the Nogozumpa glacier. Before reaching the top of this magnificent peak you will arrive at Gokyo Village. There are several lakes in this high valley and this small village of a few stone houses is nestled along side one of them.

When you finally reach the top of this trail you will find yourself on a black rocky summit that offers views many think rival those of Everest. From the top of Gokyo Ri you can see several other 8000 meter peaks. Not only can you see Everest you can also see Lhotse, Kangchenjunga, Makalu, and Cho Oyu. The 360-degree views from this peak offer much more visibility of the Himalayas then does its famous neighbor. Another added bonus to this peak is the fact that it is not as famous or crowded as its neighbor. This makes it a perfect destination for those hikers who loathe the commercialism of other Himalayan peaks.
